Serena Williams: 2021 season

For Williams, who turned 40 years old last week, injuries have marred her 2021 season. At the Wimbledon Championships, Williams injured her right leg during the opening round match and left the court in tears. Subsequently, she skipped the Tokyo Olympics and Cincinnati Masters to recover from the injury.

Before the last month’s US Open, Williams withdrew from the tournament citing a torn hamstring. With just a handful of tournaments left in the season, her return seems unlikely before next year.

Despite having reached four Grand Slam finals since the 2017 Australian Open, Williams has suffered a defeat on each occasion. The American’s hopes of winning an elusive 24th Grand Slam title and equaling Margaret Court’s record seem bleaker.
