Prior to this, the longest WTA rivalry of ‘Serena and Maria’ has never met before the pre-quarterfinal stage of a tournament and both of them have never lost an opening-round match at the US Open. Today, in the super-hyped opening-round collision, it was the eight-seed, Serena Williams winning over Maria Sharapova 6-1, 6-1 in their 22nd meeting.

When the last time, Sharapova defeated Williams in 2004, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic were yet open their Grand Slam accounts and Roger Federer had won four Grand Slams. Since then, the Russian is the search of her third victory against the American legend, Serena Williams and all the above names are career slam champions today!

Set One:

With Serena making a comfortable hold, Maria showered a few tough serves and made a hold at 1-1. The next game dealt with a deuce on Serena’s serve, but the fierce serve from Williams did not elongate the game.

With Sharapova netting a backhand on her serve, Williams lead by 3-1, her dominance in the opening set remained undaunted and she consolidated for a 4-1 lead after just 17 minutes.

As erroneous tennis from Maria Sharapova persisted, Serena fed her longtime rival with a baguette in the opening set. The average second serve speed of Serena was 104 mph in the opening set.

Simply Serena:

9 winners

3 unforced errors

100% points won from Maria’s second serve

6-1 in 24 minutes!

Set Two:

Serena held a 2-0 lead in the second set. While she committed a few errors, Sharapova faced two break chances to take away Serena’s game.

Slayer Serena!

Winner from Maria!

However, passing shots in the form of winners blew away those opportunities and Maria lost her serve in the next game as well. Serena Williams led by 4-1. Very soon, she fed another breadstick to the five-time Grand Slam champion.

20-2!

“Every time I play against her, I bring out some of my best tennis. I mean obviously, I’m going against a player who has won five grand slams and been in the final of even more so that never eases. Every practice after that was super intense,” Williams said after her smooth victory.
