Serena Williams saw her US Open 2020 dreams end after she lost to Victoria Azarenka in the semifinals. Although Serena reached the US Open finals last year, she won’t lose any ranking points as the new rules take into consideration the best performance between 2019 and 2020. But the American could be threatened by other movers around her and could be pushed out of the top 10.

The main movers in the rankings right now are Naomi Osaka and Victoria Azarenka. Both of them have bettered their 2019 US Open performance by reaching the final. Serena Williams currently sits at 8th place with 4080 points, one position above Osaka, and 19 places above Azarenka.

Calculating the point gains of both the players, Osaka currently has 4020 points. She will add another 1060 points and jump to 4th in the rankings if she loses the final against Azarenka. If Osaka wins the final, she will add 1760 points to her tally and reach 3rd. So in the coming update of the WTA rankings, Serena will lose a place and move down to 9th. Osaka will be well clear of Serena Williams’ ranking point.

Azarenka has 1832 ranking points. She will add a whopping 1290 points and jump to 14th if she loses the final. If Azarenka wins the final, she adds another 1990 points and goes to 11th place, two places behind Serena. Azarenka could finish at 3822 ranking points, 258 points behind Serena.

As the tour moves to Europe, Serena could regain some places. Following the US Open, the Italian Open begins straight away on September 14th. Serena last year reached the second round and so a deeper run into the tournament could give her some handy points. Coming to the French Open, Serena was knocked out in the 3rd round last year, so here again, a deeper run will give her a good return of points.
