Such is the respect and admiration people have for the American star.

Andrew Stephen “Andy” Roddick is considered one of the greatest servers of the game and a modern great. The 2003 US Open Champion, and the last American to hold the year end world number one spot, Roddick was probably the victim of playing in the wrong era- the one dominated by Federer and Nadal.

‘A-Rod’ has lost four GS finals to Federer and despite this fact he’s at the forefront of people who praise the Swiss, Roddick was probably the most gracious in defeat and of course was equally humble in his wins.

We loved his new role as BBC commentator, his fresh voice and witty opinions were a treat to listen. Roddick has been an entertainer off the court as well, he likes to mimic many of his on court competitors.

Roddick is also generous when it comes to giving back to the society. Apart from his 2004 ESPY Award for Best Male Tennis Player, he won the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award of the Year because of his charity efforts. He still is really active with his foundation works.

Roddick decided to call it a day in 2012 US Open and Juan Martin Del Potro became the last guy to beat him, a not so fitting end to his great career. But every time he stepped on the court, you were bound to be entertained and he has continued to do so even after his retirement.

As Roddick celebrates his birthday today, we wish him all the luck. He is also expecting his first child this year.

Happy Birthday Andy.
