When the Western & Southern Open began, everyone was looking forward to seeing Serena Williams play. However, she wasn’t in action for long as she lost her third-round match against Maria Sakkari. Since Serena is considered to be one of the best players ever, this win was extra special for Maria.

Serena Williams has won 23 Grand Slams throughout her career and has also set many records along the way. Naturally, beating her is the ultimate achievement for any tennis player and Maria Sakkari is no different. In the post-match interview, she said, “Of course, it’s a dream coming true because she’s a role model for me, for many other girls. What she has achieved in our sport is unique and I don’t know if anyone else is going to do it again. For sure, not for many years. So, I really admire her, her whole attitude and everything. So, I am pretty happy with my result.”

Serena’s loss came as a surprise to many. She admitted that she was cramping during the match but went on to say that she wasn’t using that as an excuse. While she does think she put herself in a bad situation, Serena will want to make sure this doesn’t happen again, especially with the US Open set to begin very soon.
