Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. is fully on board for a reunion with the New York Giants. Over the past few months, it’s become possible to think of the veteran closing out his career with the team that made him a star. Head coach John Harbaugh, who worked with him at the Baltimore Ravens, sees the WR as one of his  “favorite people.”

But he’s yet to send over a contract for Beckham to sign. Amid this mystery, the WR took to social media to drop a cryptic message.

“Shoulda just left me alone, I wasn’t botherin’ nobody !!.” Beckham posted on X on May 24. “Naa u poked the Tiger… can’t wait.

Beckham did a workout for the Giants in April this year, and there have been lots of positive talks between them. After the workout, Harbaugh told the press that he “really [liked]” the WR. And at the rookie minicamp, the head coach stressed that Beckham wants to be able to “make a difference.” New York isn’t dismissing the idea of OBJ, but they have yet to hint whether signing him is a possibility. Harbaugh wants to let this situation play into training camp, he added.

Contrary to the positive talks, the Giants have been retooling the WR room despite OBJ being available. Calvin Austin, Darnell Mooney, and tight end Isaiah Likely were picked up in free agency. Darius Slayton and Malik Nabers will remain the top WRs, even though the latter’s return from injury has been delayed a little bit. The team also drafted WR Malachi Fields. Beckham Jr. won’t get to make the difference he wants to in such a crowded room.

Odell Beckham Jr. has been on a tough journey since his exit from the Giants. When he was at New York, he was the No. 1 WR, crossing the 1,000-yard mark in four of his five seasons with the team. But after leaving the Giants, he’s hit that number in just one more season, at Cleveland. His reps were lessened from 2020 onwards, and he hasn’t played football for more than a year now. Beckham has played in 59 games after leaving New York.

The WR is 33 years old and has been limited in production after suffering repeated injuries. Both these factors dim the prospect of the Giants giving him a spot on their roster. They already have enough talent at wide receiver to make up for Beckham.

However, he can still hold on to a silver lining that has developed recently.

Will Malik Nabers’s injury bring Odell Beckham Jr. to the Giants?

The expectation is that quarterback Jaxson Dart will be relying on the Nabers-Slayton duo this season. Nabers is the most talented WR on that roster, and needs to play a big role in the offense for the Giants’ success. But the recovery from his right knee injury is still doubtful. On May 21, Harbaugh said it was “impossible to predict” when he could come back.

Nabers went through a “cleanup” procedure this offseason to remove scar tissue. He has been frequenting the Giants’ facility and continues rehab work, per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. But Nabers might not be able to feature in the Week 1 game against the Dallas Cowboys, despite this being a “goal” for Harbaugh and Co.

This is where Odell Beckham Jr.’s chances look brighter.

“They like where he’s trending; it’s just one of those situations where they don’t know exactly when he’s going to get on the field,” Fowler said. “That’s why they could maybe add a receiver at some point; Odell Beckham is still out there.”

In 2024, Nabers set rookie records in the league by being targeted 170 times and racking up 1,204 receiving yards. Losing that potential will be detrimental for the Giants, especially when they’re facing the revamped Cowboys defense. If his rehab doesn’t present a better picture, maybe the Giants will be inclined to add a free agent to their WR room.

Whether or not Odell Beckham Jr. makes the cut in this case is left to be seen.
