Simona Halep Says She has ‘Never’ Played a Better Match Than Wimbledon Championships 2019 Finals

World No. 7, Simona Halep reveals that she played the ‘best match’ of her life as she stunned Serena Williams 6-2, 6-2 to lift the crown of the Wimbledon Championships 2019. With this victory, she became the first Romanian to claim the Wimbledon title.

In the post-match on-court interview, Simona Halep divulged that she was too nervous before the start of the match. She said, “I had nerves. My stomach was not very well before the match.”

The Romanian star also feels that she “never” played a better match in her life.

The interviewer asked the 27-year-old whether she has ever played a better match than this?
Simona Halep replied smilingly, “No, never.”

Simona Halep also expressed her gratitude to her parents for supporting her throughout her career. She continued, “It was an amazing year and an amazing tournament. I can’t wait to come back here. I want to thank my parents. They supported me since actually since I was born.” 

She was also asked about what point in her career did she think that she could conquer the Wimbledon title. The Romanian replied, “Today” (smiling).

However, she further added that she never thought about winning the Championships. “I never thought. I’m very honest. I never thought that I’m able to win on the grass with all these players that are very tall and serving with a lot of power,” the world no. 7 continued.

With this victory, Simona Halep narrows her head-to-head gap with the 23-time grand slam champion, Serena Williams to 9-2. She also won her first grass-court match against the American.

“I love grass,” she said after reaching the semifinals,” said Simona. “It’s the first time when I say that.”

She continued: “It’s a little bit dangerous when you play on grass because the feet are not really as stable as you are on hardcourt or a clay court. That’s why I prefer those surfaces. But now I started to feel it, to have it in my hands, to have it in my legs and also in my mind, which is very important.”
