“So Beautiful and So Misunderstood”: Will Smith Honors Venus and Serena Williams’ Journey in ‘King Richard’

The much-awaited film ‘King Richard’ will hit the theaters on 19th November. Based on a true story, Will Smith plays the role of the protagonist Richard Williams, the father of two of the greatest athletes of all time – Serena Williams and Venus Williams.

The biopic movie traces the rise of the Williams sisters’ through the eyes of Richard, who played the most pivotal role in raising his two daughters into world-class tennis players.

Will Smith joins Venus and Serena Williams for an exclusive interview

Recently, Will Smith joined the William sisters for an EW photoshoot ahead of the film’s release. During the interview, the four-time Grammy award winner mentioned his motivation behind opting for the role was to honor the incredible journey of the Williams sisters.

“For me, taking this role was to honor the beautiful aspects of your journey and your fans. I saw something that was so beautiful and so misunderstood. I was inspired to be a part,” said Smith.

Previously, Smith has essayed the role of the legendary boxer, Muhammad Ali, in the film ‘Ali’ and an American entrepreneur, Chris Gardner, in the film ‘Pursuit of Happiness, receiving critical acclaim for both performances.

Over the last two decades, Venus and Serena have been at the forefront of women’s tennis. The duo has won 30 Grand Slam singles titles combined and has inspired an entire generation of tennis players.

One of the most poignant moments of the interview was Serena paying a big tribute to her elder sister Venus. “There would be no Serena if there was no Venus. She was my hero. She still is my hero,” said Serena.

Just a few weeks back, the second trailer of the biographical drama film got released and the fans have given a thunderous response to it. While the world has been witness to the Williams sisters’ exploits on the tennis court, it would be fascinating to watch the trials and tribulations they faced towards becoming a tennis player.
