The 2022 FIFA World Cup, hosted by Qatar, is scheduled to start on 20 November. While the buildup to the World Cup has sent fans into a state of frenzy, there have been a lot of controversies surrounding the hosts. The bidding for the 2022 edition of the World Cup started back in 2009, with Qatar winning the rights in 2010. Sepp Blatter was the FIFA president when the executive awarded the hosting rights to Qatar. Years after making the decision, the former soccer administrator recently admitted that it was a mistake.

Sepp Blatter resigned from his post as the FIFA boss in 2015 amidst the FIFA corruption case. Later that year, FIFA banned Blatter and Michel Platini for eight years. Last year, he was banned for a second time for six years and fined 1 million Swiss Francs.

Sepp Blatter recently appeared for an interview with the Swiss newspaper Tages Anzeiger. During the interview, he revealed that awarding the hosting rights to Qatar was a ‘mistake’.

“The choice of Qatar was a mistake,” Blatter told the Swiss newspaper. “At the time, we actually agreed in the executive committee that Russia should get the 2018 World Cup and the USA that of 2022. It would have been a gesture of peace if the two long-standing political opponents had hosted the World Cup one after the other.”
