The debate over who holds the title of CONCACAF’s best left-back has taken a new twist, with USMNT icon Alexi Lalas making a bold statement in favor of Antonee Robinson. In a recent discussion, Lalas placed Robinson, nicknamed “Jedi,” above Alphonso Davies in a combined lineup of the United States and Canadian national teams, a claim bound to raise eyebrows.
Robinson’s recent performances have more than justified this recognition. Against Liverpool, the Fulham left-back delivered a historic display, becoming the first US international to notch two assists in a Premier League game since 1993. Marco Silva, Fulham’s coach, heaped praise on Robinson, calling him “brave, assertive, and aggressive in the right way” for his defensive and offensive contributions, particularly in frustrating Mohamed Salah.
“Alphonso Davies comes up, and yeah, he’s played at times on that left-hand side,” Lalas acknowledged. “But also, let’s be honest, he’s one of the great left-backs in the world. And I don’t think it’s sacrilegious to now start to include Jedi Robinson—so much so that if I’m putting together a mixture of the two teams, I’m actually having Jedi Robinson play the left-back position as opposed to Alphonso Davies.” He continued, “Now I can push Alphonso Davies up there, but that’s how good I think Jedi Robinson is. How prominent he has become and how important he has become, not just for country when we’re talking about the USMNT, but also for his club.”

At just 27 years old, Robinson is heading into the January transfer window as one of the most talked-about players, with speculation mounting over a potential move to a top-tier club. Lalas expressed optimism about Robinson’s future, saying, “It just gets really, really exciting as we head into this transfer window in January and certainly as we go forward in the next year and a half relative to the World Cup. What Jedi Robinson is and, more importantly, what I think he’s heading to and can be.”

The Rise of Robinson: A Legitimate Rival to Davies in CONCACAF’s Left-Back Debate
This growing appreciation for Robinson doesn’t mean Davies’ legacy is being overlooked. At just 24, Davies remains one of the most electrifying players in the world, combining blistering pace with technical brilliance. However, Lalas’ remarks highlight Robinson’s rise as a significant figure not only for the USMNT but also in club football.
What’s your perspective on:
Is Antonee Robinson truly surpassing Alphonso Davies, or is this just Lalas stirring the pot?
Have an interesting take?
Lalas’ playful comment that “Canada would be lucky to become the 51st US state” stirred some lighthearted controversy, but the core message remained clear: Robinson has reached a level where people can legitimately compare him to Davies and, in some scenarios, even prefer him over the Bayern Munich star. As the transfer window looms and the World Cup approaches, the competition between these two standout left-backs is a fascinating subplot, proving that CONCACAF boasts some of the finest talents in world football.
