The ongoing Women’s Soccer World Cup 2o23 has seen its fair share of surprising moments. From Sweden knocking out the USWNT team to Jamaica’s dream run to their first knockouts in World Cup history. In a laundry list of surprises, the biggest came from the Round of 16 game between England and Nigeria.

Manchester City Women’s star forward Chloe Kelly put on a stunning performance in the penalties for her side against Nigeria guiding her team to the quarter-finals. However, just days after the game, an interesting statistic has taken the soccerverse by surprise, eliciting some surprising reactions from fans across the globe.

The game between Nigeria and England saw both sides play regular and extra time to a goalless draw. With the game drawn into the penalties, England triumphed over their opponents winning 4-2. England star Choe Kelly netted a stunning strike in the game that statistically shocked the community.

According to Connected Ball Technology, the tech used to measure shot power Chloe’s strike was recorded at 110.79 km/h [69mph]. Her numbers in the game against Nigeria surpassed the strongest Premier League strike from the 2022/23 edition. West Ham forward Said Benrahma recorded the strongest penalty in the season with his numbers touching 107.2km/h [66.6mph].

Fans have been taken aback by the surprising stat from the World Cup game with a lot of different reactions pouring out on the internet. One fan took a dig at men’s soccer following the stat through her tweet.

Another fan claimed that most women in the World Cup take better penalties than men playing the sport.

One fan praised the shot, calling it an iconic penalty.

Another fan slammed the trolls who were making fun of Kelly.

One fan, though, defended the Premier League players claiming that Kelly just smashed the ball.

While there has been a lot of debate going around the stats, there has been long talk about equal pay when it comes to players. Both men’s and women’s soccer have reached new heights and despite their early exit, the USWNT was the first side to truly achieve equal pay in soccer.

USWNT and their road to equal pay in soccer

While soccer has always been a male-dominated game for years, the USWNT were the side to change the game across the country. The side is far more successful than their fellow counterparts clinching the World Cup title a record four times.

A lawsuit between the USWNT and US Soccer in May this year finalized the deal, with US Soccer pledging to distribute equal pay amongst in players. Under the said agreement the players across the sport in the country will have an equal share in the $24 million pay and prize from international competitions.
