Soccer can get you to unexpected destinations sometimes. Angel Di Maria is at the fag end of his international career, with the star achieving the best in the sport. The 35-year-old is still in demand at club level, if not in Europe, then in Brazil. According to reports, Luis Suarez’s previous employer, Gremio, could offer Di Maria a deal who is currently on a short-term commitment with Benfica.

The Brazilian Serie A team has benefited a lot from the Uruguayan international. The club is now looking for a suitable replacement, as their world-class player left to join Inter Miami. But to what extent the team can push to get a deal with the Argentine veteran is a question to note.

The Argentinian has contributed immensely to all the clubs he’s been a part of. With a similar view, Gremio is set to go for Angel Di Maria, as per Itatiaia. As his Benfica contract is set to expire in June, the veteran will be able to sign a pre-contract or hold talks with other clubs as he’ll be a free agent. Gremio’s major patron, Celso Rigo, an agriculture businessman sponsored Luis Suarez’s paycheque and is expected to continue to do so with further big deals. The club is entering a very important year, 2024. Gremio was resurrected after being demoted to Serie B in 2021. Finishing 2nd in the Serie A, this year, amid strong teams like Flamengo, Atletico Mineiro, and Fluminense, they have booked a spot in the Copa Libertadores after 2020.

Di Maria, on the other hand, has already made plans to go to his boyhood club, Rosario Central. Even though nothing has progressed with Gremio, the fans in Rosario will already surprised by the current news. Di Maria is having a quiet season, scoring just nine goals in 21 games for Benfica in all tournaments. The player had a disappointing UEFA Champions League after the 2022–23 Liga Portugal champions were knocked out of the group stages. The midfielder could only squeeze out a goal and an assist in the five games. However, Gremio will be satisfied with the amount of experience the player brings after losing their premium goal-scorer.

One take at a time

Growing up in a sporting background, I found a passion for soccer through the remarkable 2002 World Cup-winning Brazilian football team. Watching the Premier League where Thierry Henry-starring ‘Invincible’ Gunners and Sir Alex Ferguson’s glorious Manchester United had ruled, I had my heart set on Arsenal. However, Ronaldo Nazario, Rivaldo, and Ronaldinho are my favorite players and Lionel Messi is the GOAT.
