26-year-old Mallory Swanson surely entered the pantheon of US Soccer greats by shooting an Olympic gold medal-winning goal against Brazil in Paris. But a tangled web of drama surrounds Swanson’s big moment. Besides Swanson, her strike partner Sophia Smith has also been a part of controversial and even ridiculous storylines in the Olympics triumph’s aftermath. The US duo raised eyebrows with the offside debacle during the game. On top of that, an Olympic Games broadcaster made a terrible mishap in giving a shout-out to the gold medalist Swanson and her husband and Chicago Cubs star Dansby Swanson.
The joy is double and surreal in the Swanson household. Mallory Swanson powered USA to an Olympic gold win on the same night Dansby Swanson had his 1,000th career hit in the Cubs’ win over the White Sox.
The Olympic broadcaster, which fans say was Fox, honored this milestone of Swanson’s only to end up facing fan fury for mixing up Swanson and Sophia Smith. The mockery of a slip-up has even raised the eyebrows of Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian.

An X user named Sarah Spain shared a screen grab of a shout-out card shown on TV, which she claims was Fox. In the card, we could see, “Golden Power Couple” and the names of Mallory and Dansby alongside their aforementioned milestones. However, the broadcasters have shown Sophia Smith’s picture in place of Swanson’s picture. This terrible mix-up and perhaps a meme material came to the fans like a perfect material to prey upon.

Fans wonder if they are drunk after seeing the Mallory Swanson-Smith error on TV
Dansby Swanson, who overwhelmingly wrote about Mallory Swanson’s last night’s achievement would be shocked to see him render a couple of goals with Sophia Smith. Interestingly, Swanson and Smith infamously became the talking points after the latter was offside during the build-up to Swanson’s game-winning goal. The offside fiasco was anyhow not so ridiculous as the Olympic broadcaster’s mix-up. And fans hence demand the broadcaster to apologize.
Certainly, this was a wrong way to honor Team USA’s only goal-scorer. Nothing to be surprised about this fan’s outlandish response.
What’s your perspective on:
How can Fox confuse Sophia Smith and Mallory Swanson? Is this acceptable in professional sports coverage?
Have an interesting take?

It is unclear if Fox has apologized for this fiasco. As if the Olympics organizer’s name slip-up was enough, the photo debacle is now leaving the fans in splits.

Even Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian took a break from his busy schedule to notice this shocking slip-up.

Finally, someone sides with the broadcaster, citing the uncanny resemblance between the Team USA duo.

Not everyone wants to empathize with the graphic designer.
Poor graphics guy. Wishing him the best of luck in his future endeavors.

While soccer fans on X are going berserk, this is not the first time the USWNT forwards’ names are getting mixed up. In a pre-game presser to the gold medal game, the Olympic organizers had mixed up the names of Rodman and Smith. Now, yet another fiasco to laugh about. But nothing is diminishing the glory of Team USA’s reclamation of the Olympic crown.
