Deadpool Superstar Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham Set Play Against MLS Teams During Their Pre-Season Tour in the United States

The Welsh soccer club, Wrexham AFC, co-owned by Ryan Reynolds, will visit the United States for the 2023 preseason and play the MLS sides during the tour. Club’s co-owner made the announcement recently.
Wrexham is owned by Rob McElhenney and Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds. North American actors took over the club in February 2021. They want the club to be an American club as they seek more support from US soccer fans. Actors are aware of the popularity of Premier League clubs in the US.

Wrexham to visit the United States in the 2023 preseason
Wrexham was due to visit the US in the preseason this year. But, as they made it to the play-off semifinal, the tour didn’t go through. Although the playoffs didn’t go as expected, Grimsby Town knocked Wrexham out in the semifinals.

The US tour will be a great opportunity for Wrexham to play some top sides and gain the momentum the owners are looking for to increase their popularity. According to reports, Wrexham will start the tour with a game against Philadelphia Union. They might play the likes of the LA Galaxy, Austin FC, and Inter Miami.

Rob McElhenney is aware of the immense popularity of the Premier League clubs in the United States but still hopes for the club to be at least the second choice behind those clubs. American Football is still the most popular sport in the country, but McElhenney believes this could change soon as soccer is getting good exposure. He hopes for big athletes’ contributions to make soccer prominent in the US.
Ryan Reynolds bought the oldest soccer club in Wales
Wrexham is the oldest club in the history of Wales and was formed in 1864. It is also the third oldest soccer team in the world. Currently, Wrexham plays in the National League, which is in the fifth tier of the English soccer system. The club is playing its soccer matches in the Racecourse Stadium since 1864.

The club records 23-time winners of the Welsh Cup. Other major trophies for Wrexham are the Football League Trophy in 2005 and the FA Trophy in 2013. American actor Rob McElhenney and Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds in 2021 took the club over through the RR McReynolds Company LLC.

In their first season as owners, Wrexham finished the runners-up in the league. They lost the play-off semifinal game against Grimsby Town. Currently, the club is second in the standings. It shows their tenure so far is going well. Their target will be promotion to EFL League Two, the third division of English Soccer, this time around.
