Erling Haaland, as expected, was the man of the match as he picked up right where he left off last season. The Norwegian talisman’s brace and Rodri’s late strike completed a dominating performance by City.
Despite the game being a one-sided affair, it had loads of entertainment. From Kompany’s homecoming to red cards, the match had multiple high points. But the biggest talking point of the match was the heated exchange caught on camera between Pep Guardiola and Haaland after the first half.

Under normal circumstances, when your star striker scores 2 goals in the first half, he is bound to get all the praise from the team’s manager. However, Pep Guardiola surprised everyone yet again with his actions. After the first half ended, the gaffer was seen running towards Haaland and giving me an earful while they made their way towards the tunnel. This animated reaction by the Spaniard irked many. USMNT icon Taylor Twellman was one among them.

In the post-match presser, the burning question in every journalist’s mind was about what went down between Pep and Erling. Satisfying everyone’s curiosity, the gaffer revealed that he gave an earful to Haaland for his excess greed to have the ball. At the cusp of the first half, the ball was consistently being lost by Manchester City’s midfielders. Hence Bernardo Silva decided to control the tempo and keep the ball to himself than go and attack. This irked the talisman. Thus, Pep gave an earful to the Norwegian justifying Bernardo’s decision to slow down the game.
“He wants all the time, ball to him, ball to him,” Guardiola said of Haaland after full-time. “But when you have two minutes left and Kovacic goes in behind and loses the ball, Rodri loses the ball. Erling wanted the ball and Bernardo was correct not to give him it,” said the Manchester City gaffer.
