“I was convinced I was staying, at home,” said a teary-eyed Lionel Messi while bidding final goodbye to FC Barcelona in 2021. The very place where he arrived as a little 13-year-old boy but beyond everyone’s expectation left as a legend. So even though the Argentinian superstar vowed to stay a one-club man throughout his career, what happened that La Pulga couldn’t continue with the Spanish giants? Well, Fabrizio Romano might have an answer.

The transfer guru recently sat down for an interview on the ‘Mics’ podcast, episode 6. Interestingly, Messi became a topic of discussion as the hosts asked about the 36-year-old’s sudden exit from Catalan club. Interestingly, Romano replied, “When Messi left Barcelona in 2021, it was an unexpected moment, because there was a contract ready to be concluded between Messi and Barcelona. Everything was ready to extend the contract, but because of the laws of financial fair play, they were not able to conclude the contract.”

Even though Barcelona was in the financial doldrums during that time, which certainly hasn’t ended as of now, they managed to draw up a decent contract extension for their star player. Unfortunately, it didn’t comply with the rules of soccer’s apex authorities, which eventually left Messi as a free agent until the summer. As he announced his decision to leave Spain after a stellar 17-season career and winning 35 trophies, the forward signed for Paris Saint-Germain.

But those two seasons with the Parisians, aside from winning three titles, were not fruitful for Messi, again making him a free agent. While that was a window of opportunity to return to his childhood club, a historic move to Inter Miami was made instead. Rest is history. But how has his life been in the MLS?

A recap on the life of Lionel Messi post-Barcelona

Even though Lionel Messi’s exit remains the most heartbreaking moment in the memory of the club, fans, and La Pulga himself, the high life didn’t stop for the Argentinian superstar. Since moving to Inter Miami, Messi has become the heart not just of the team or the MLS, but even of the United States. Last season, the Rosario native led the Herons to their first-ever trophy, lifting the Leagues Cup.

This year, the rallying efforts to take David Beckham-owned soccer franchise to the next level continue. Tata Martino’s side is currently sitting at the top of the table, with Messi spearheading the team with his record-breaking antics, notching 10 goals and 9 assists so far. Not to mention that a few months ago, he brought his 8th Ballon d’Or to the Magic City. Nevertheless, his influence at Inter Miami is truly visible.

Certainly, his former Catalan side and its fans must be missing it. But one way or another, the love story between Lionel Messi and FC Barcelona had to end.
