Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are in the news for their desire to buy the NHL team Ottawa Senators. It won’t be the first sporting venture for Reynolds, though. He is the co-owner of the third oldest soccer club, Wrexham A.F.C.

The Welsh club plays in National League, the fifth tier of the English Football pyramid. Currently, they are second in the table and narrowly missed out on promotion last season with their play-offs semifinal loss. The club has gotten to a new life under new owners, but Reynolds was anxious when he first visited the club after the takeover.

Reynolds was anxious as an owner when he first visited the club. It was the feeling he expressed in the Wrexham Documentary while speaking to his partner McElhenney.

Rob – So there is a real risk for us.
Ryan – Yeah, I mean that’s part of the anxiety. Like watching the team lose last night, you’re thinking the investment in this club took a hit.
Rob – Yes, and there is a version of the story where we are villains.
Ryan – Oh that’s my usual story. That’s usually the story in my head.
Rob – It doesn’t work, and then we go. “What are we gonna do? We have to sell it”. And then we’re the bad guys.
Ryan – Fuck that. It’s gonna work.

Although, the decision to buy a club in the lower league came as a surprise to many fans. It was a joint decision between McElhenney and Reynolds to buy a club from the lower division and build it in a way that it becomes a force on the soccer map.

The reasons to opt for a lower-division club

McElhenney approached Reynolds with the idea of buying a soccer club a few years back. It was McElhenney’s idea to go for a low-tier club that resonated with Reynolds quickly. The duo went through a thought process before finalizing the Welsh club.

However, there was no such direct connection between the duo and the club, but they felt to go for Wrexham, which was on sale. Their vision was clear, and they want to build a club from ground level to make it a force to reckon with.

Wrexham narrowly missed out on promotion last season. They will strive again for their promotion this season as they currently sit second in the table. There’s a long journey ahead for the club under the new ownership. The McReynolds era has just started.
