Soccer fans around the world were treated to an exhilarating contest. Liverpool and Man City shared points each in arguably one of the matches at the season. However, one man who was not happy was Jurgen Klopp. The Reds boss saw his team being denied a late penalty by Michael Oliver for a high boot. In the post-match interview, the German manager took a dig at the referees and said, “It’s a penalty for all football people.”

However, this is not the first time the Liverpool boss has called out the men in the middle. In this article, we will be looking at previous instances where referees felt the wrath of the German tactician.

In 2021, Liverpool drew against Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham. However, the match wasn’t without its fair share of controversy. Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson was given a red card for a foul on Tottenham defender Emerson Royal. Interestingly, earlier in the game Harry Kane had made a very similar challenge on Robertson, which was overlooked. Jurgen Klopp was not happy and told Tierney, “I have no problems with any referees, only you.”

2. Michael Oliver’s 3 decisions that cost Liverpool at the Emirates

In 2022/23, Liverpool lost 2-3 against Arsenal. However, the scoreline was not a full reflection of the performance. Jurgen Klopp’s side saw an offside goal given against and a penalty claim rejected for a handball. Adding salt to the wound, Arsenal received a penalty later on for a seemingly innocuous foul. Regarding Michael Oliver’s decisions, Klopp said, “In this specific game, just the correct ref decisions would have been helpful, to be honest.”

3. Klopp vs Stuart Atwell

2023 did not start well for the Merseyside club as they lost 3-1 to Brentford. However, the third goal scored by Mbuemo was not appreciated by Jurgen Klopp and the staff. This was because Mbuemo had seemingly fouled defender Ibrahima Konate before scoring the goal. However, Stuart Atwell did not agree and Klopp remarked, “The third goal I really cannot respect.

4. When Simon Hooper drew the lines wrong

Liverpool vs Tottenham in 2023 had it all. The Reds saw a goal ruled out incorrectly as offside. Moreover, midfielder Curtis Jones was awarded a red card for a very soft foul. Liverpool even had another man sent down. Jurgen Klopp was enraged at Simon Hooper & Co. Following the match, regarding the offside, he said, “It’s not offside. Never. They drew their lines wrong.” Following the match, Simon Hooper was even removed from refereeing duties temporarily.

The Liverpool-Tottenham game in April 2023 was again the center of another controversy. Klopp celebrated his team’s goal with a wild celebration, and as a result, he was yellow-carded. But Paul Tierney said something, which the German didn’t appreciate. Jurgen Klopp revealed, “What [Tierney] said to me then when he gave me the yellow card is not OK.” Not a good look for the referee.
