The controversy surrounding Berhalter surfaced just before the World Cup. Giovanni Reyna had fallen out of favor with the coach, who questioned his commitment and expressed disappointment in his performance. During the World Cup, Reyna was given a limited playing time of approximately 50 minutes. Reyna’s parents were reportedly upset by the situation and contacted US Soccer, leaking details about Berhalter.

It involved Berhalter allegedly assaulting his then-girlfriend and current wife Rosalind in a bar in 1991. In response, Berhalter and his wife made a public statement addressing the incident, asserting that there was nothing to hide and that he had been forgiven years ago. The revelation of the Reyna family’s involvement in leaking the details came as a surprise. Some soccer fans are puzzled by Reyna’s situation, while Claudio Reyna, Giovanni’s father, denied allegations of threatening Berhalter.
