Marcus Rashford has found himself embroiled in drama. The Englishman missed out on Manchester United’s FA Cup clash last week after he was seen partying late night in Belfast the night before the game. Fans have been outraged at the player’s antics, calling for his head. Not everyone is gunning for the winger, with United icon Roy Keane defending Rashford from the criticism. However, Keane did question the player’s decision-making skills by labeling him an ‘idiot.’

The Reds Devils issued a statement earlier this week providing an update on Rashford’s situation. After issuing an apology, the player has been fined of his week’s wages and restored to the squad. Manager Erik ten Hag also commented on the situation: “He has taken responsibility, and for the rest, it’s an internal matter. Case closed.” But there were others who didn’t let go of Rashford’s repetitive actions so easily.

First, the “unacceptable” birthday celebrations, and now this for Marcus Rashford?

The hosts of the Overlap podcast commented on Rashford’s recent activities, bringing up a past event with a similar aftermath. Roy Keane said, “We mentioned the last time he went out on his birthday.” This happened in October 2023, when the United forward pre-planned party celebrations just hours after their 3-0 defeat to Manchester City. “It is unacceptable,” said ten Hag at the time. But interestingly, his remarks then were similar to the ones now. “He apologized, and that is it.” In light of this and his recent outing, Keane questioned Rashford’s decision-making abilities.

“His decision-making at his time is obviously not very good. I don’t think his attitude is of ‘I don’t care anymore’ type thing about the game, I don’t think it is. But his behavior is that of an idiot. He’s giving people that opportunity to go after him,” the former United skipper surmised. However, he also empathized with the forward. “He’s 26. We’ve all been there and made daft mistakes. We’ve done worse than that. I’ve never thought for one minute that he’s some nasty bad lad. He’s certainly made a few mistakes.” Keane also suggested why the 26-year-old is coming under so much fire.

He said, The fact that United is struggling. He’s an easy target.” United isn’t having the best of seasons, and Marcus Rashford hasn’t been helping his case with his performances either. He’s failed to deliver expectations. The attacking forward has seemed like a shell of his former self, bagging just 6 goals from 24 outings for the side.

While Roy Keane may have gone a little easy on Marcus Rashford, another United legend didn’t mince his words, comparing the forward to other United players who’ve found themselves in trouble.

Rio Ferdinand compared Rashford to Sancho, Ronaldo, and Greenwood

Former club star Rio Ferdinand was unhappy with Rashford’s actions. During his podcast, the defender questioned the player’s choices, claiming he was lucky to avoid getting severely penalized. “Players in his position have been hammered by the club. One’s gone out to Dortmund on loan. One’s not at the club anymore, and the other one was on mad charge or accusation,” said Ferdinand, referring to Jadon Sancho, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Mason Greenwood.

Ferdinand stressed that it’s imperative for the attacking forward to keep a check on himself. “There’s a lot of noise around the club. You’re one of the experienced players now. Keep that noise down.” The defender urged the player to keep his head down and focus on his performance rather than finding himself in the eye of the storm.
