It’s no secret that soccer players often banter with each other. Be it pulling out crazy pranks or pulling each other’s legs, the spirit of fun never wanes. Reciting a similar instance, a former Paris Saint-Germain star revealed that while Kylian Mbappe ‘liked to watch’ Everton games, Lionel Messi used to make things ‘difficult‘ for him by often making fun of the Premier League side.

Idrissa Gana Gueye might have left Everton for Parisians in the summer of 2019, but his heart remained at Goodison Park. Even when they were battling relegation in 2021, the midfielder stuck through thick and thin, supporting the Toffees and watching their games from the French capital. Several of his PSG teammates also used to watch the Merseyside club, with Mbappe notably among them. “Mbappe, yeah, he would watch. He liked to watch every game,” said Gueye, as compiled by the Liverpool Echo. However, it was Messi who used to be blunt about Gueye’s former employers.

When asked if La Pulga used to watch Everton play, he said, “No. It was difficult for me because we were losing a lot and he would say, ‘Bro, come on, you see your team is losing and playing like this?’ but it was funny.” Despite Messi having a laugh at Everton’s performance, Gueye never took the banter to heart. In fact, he fervently supported his former side to get out of the relegation zone by sending his ex-teammates a few messages. Interestingly, Lionel Messi wasn’t the only one who used to troll Gueye for Everton’s poor display.

Aside from Lionel Messi, Idrissa Gueye was forced to face the wrath of his other PSG teammate, Julian Draxler. “I remember Draxler every time we lose, he would go, ‘You see your team, they are not good!’ and I would say, ‘We will survive,'” he said. Thankfully, Everton did manage to survive against Crystal Palace on the final day to avoid relegation, which puffed Gueye’s chest with pride.

While Draxler said to Gueye that his side was ‘lucky’, the Senegalese midfielder was confident about the Toffees staying in the PL. Notably, before Draxler joined Qatar’s Al Ahli, Gueye, who rejoined Everton in 2022, had urged the German midfielder to join him at Goodison Park. “I told him to come to Everton but he hasn’t listened!” said the 34-year-old.
