The world of sports is a place where dreams can be realized and broken in a matter of minutes. This is what happened to Wrexham AFC in 2008 when they were relegated to the fifth division of English soccer. For former star Steve Evans, that moment of relegation was the beginning of a 15-year nightmare that he could not escape.

Evans joined Wrexham in 2006 as a solid center-back. He played over 150 games for the club and was a key player in the team. However, the 2008 season proved to be a disaster for the club. They were unable to secure their spot in the fourth division and were relegated to the fifth division. This was a crushing blow not only for the club itself but also for the fans, players, and staff members who had been hoping for better things.

Talking with The Leader, Evans vividly remembers that night saying, “I’ll never forget that night at Hereford, being on the pitch and seeing the faces of fans at the final whistle”. He also added how this was one of his worst experiences in soccer along with snapping his Achilles heel. “From that day on, I’ve always felt ‘I owe Wrexham FC’ for being part of that team that suffered relegation,” he said.

For Evans, this was only the start, as Wrexham remained stuck in the fifth division for the next 15 years. It was a period of disappointment and one where the club was almost on the verge of extinction. That is, until this season.

The nightmare is finally over for Steve Evans

The struggle of being stuck in the fifth division for 15 long years became unbearable for Evans. He longed for the day when Wrexham could finally earn back their promotion, and it finally came for him on 22 April. Wrexham won 3-1 against Boreham Wood and, with the win sealed the title and promotion.

For Evans, this was a moment of great relief. “It’s taken 15 years, a few near misses along the way, but it’s such a relief that they are back in the Football League,” he shared. “It’s so deserved”.

The Welsh player further added while commending the owners. “It’s brilliant for the fans to experience a promotion season and the new owners have given everyone hope and you would expect Wrexham to do well next season,” he concluded. Wrexham has come a long way since their days of struggling in the fifth division. Moreover, the club is now being dubbed to clinch back-to-back promotions.
