The USA vs Iran World Cup match in 2022 wasn’t without its share of political controversies and noise. USMNT captain Tyler Adams disclosed that the lead-up to the contest was intense. In the recent Netflix documentary, Captains of the World, the 24-year-old reflects on the tough questions he fielded during the pre-match interview with one hostile journalist.

In case you are not aware of the incident, one report criticized Adams during the match conference for pronouncing Iran’s name incorrectly as “eye-ran.” From then on, things got even more heated as the reporter dug into off-court controversies like discrimination.

The midfielder added, “As soon as I walked into that press conference, you could just tell immediately how hostile it was about to be.” Following this, the scene shifts to the hostile interview in which Tyler Adams calmly responds to the questions posed by the interviewer while talking about his time “growing up…in a white family” and how education is “super important” in such situations.

The ex-Leeds star reflected on the exchange and said, “When he asked me that, it wasn’t him attacking me, me attacking him, or going at him in any sense. We knew we were going to deal with a lot of things that had nothing to do with our performance.” After the contentious interview, Team USA defeated Iran 1-0 to advance to the Round of 16. Conversely, Tyler Adams earned a substantial transfer, but unfortunately, his injuries have marred the experience.
