David Coote is making headlines for obvious reasons. Regarded as one of the Premier League’s most experienced referees, the 42-year-old has been suspended by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) after a video surfaced allegedly showing him making derogatory remarks about Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp. Naturally, this has left ardent Reds fans fuming, with some even speculating that Coote’s remarks might stem from his support of a rival club. Many are even suggesting he could be a Manchester United fan!
Why? Well, that’s because ever since the Nottinghamshire-born referee has come into the spotlight, the whole soccer world has been diving deeper to know everything there is about his past incidents. One such thing that came to notice was his profile picture on his Facebook account. In the click, Coote can be clearly seen wearing a suit while posing with a smile inside Manchester United’s home ground, the Old Trafford.
That’s not all as his cover photo is also of Sir Alex Ferguson Stand of the Old Trafford. This has been igniting various responses across all social media platforms that Coote is a United fan. However, surprisingly enough, despite his infamous click at the red side of Manchester, he is actually not a Red Devils supporter. Apparently, David Coote has been registered as a Notts County fan with the PGMOL.

Whether he also supports Manchester United alongside The Magpies, who are currently contesting in League Two, is something that only Coote must answer. However, his alleged video clearly suggests that the 43-year-old isn’t a fan of Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp. It shows him saying “s–t” to the Reds, while also calling their former manager who left after the end of the 2023/24 season a “German c–t” and “f—ing arrogant.”
It’s unclear when was this video taken. Also, reports suggest that neither Coote has denied it’s him in the video nor Liverpool have commented anything on the matter. Regardless, the statement from PGMOL said, “David Coote has been suspended with immediate effect pending a full investigation. PGMOL will be making no further comment until that process is complete.”
Then again, the question looms exactly what compelled Coote to make such a remark against Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp.

Here’s why David Coote made derogatory remarks against Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool!
A widely circulated minute-long video captures David Coote recounting an old incident involving Liverpool and their manager, Jurgen Klopp. Specifically, it was the Reds’ match against Burnley in July 2020, during the lockdown period. Though Klopp’s side had already secured the title, they were aiming for a historic 100-point finish. Unfortunately, the game ended in a 1-1 draw after Jay Rodriguez’s equalizer canceled out Andy Robertson’s opener.
After the match, Klopp had a tense exchange with Coote and other officials over some on-field decisions. In the post-match press conference, Klopp also remarked that the referee overlooked fouls on Liverpool players. This incident is believed to have sparked Coote’s alleged grudge against Klopp and Liverpool, which may explain the recent video showing him making critical remarks.

Notably, Coote—a Premier League referee since 2018—has had a number of high-profile run-ins with Liverpool in the past. The latest took place this past Saturday when he officiated Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Anfield, a victory that put the Merseyside club five points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
