Wrexham has always had a strong fan base, but it has grown globally since 2020 when the club was acquired by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. The stars saw in the club an opportunity to bring a fresh wave of energy and enthusiasm to an institution that had long been in the doldrums.

The duo is committed to growing the club’s fan base and taking its story to a global audience. One way they are doing this is by organizing a pre-season tour in the United States. In this, the Red Dragons will take on Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester United. For former Wrexham player Paul Rutherford, the tour is going to be even bigger than anticipated.

Former Wrexham star shows his immense faith

For those who don’t know, Paul Rutherford played for Wrexham for five years from 2016 to 2021. He also recently participated in a friendly tournament called The Soccer Tournament (TST) in North Carolina, as part of the Wrexham Red Dragons consisting of former players and club legends. Here he witnessed firsthand the immense support that Wrexham has in the US.

It was mad,” Rutherford said in a recent interview with The Leader. “They worked it out that 74 percent of fans who bought tickets were there to support Wrexham. You won’t realize how big the documentary has made the club and the size of the fanbase over there”. He shared how they were also singing their songs and shared, “It was incredible the way they were chanting”.

Rutherford is right in referring to the documentary series Welcome to Wrexham, which has gained a large following, particularly in the United States. Rutherford believes that this increased profile will translate into a Premier League-level tour for the team in the United States.

“It will be incredible for them,” Rutherford added. Those lads are going to experience a Premier League tour“. This is a bold claim, but one that is not without merit. The increased exposure and support that they receive in America could translate into greater success on the pitch, both in the short and long term.
