Taking the right decisions in sports is invaluable. It makes or breaks the career of the athlete. However, it’s a great feeling when an athlete takes a risk, and it pays off. And that’s what happened with the Wrexham AFC star. 

The Welsh club had a dream 2022-23 season. The record-breaking season saw the world’s third-oldest club winning the National League title. Wrexham got a promotion to League Two after spending 15 years, and Anthony Forde became part of the dream run thanks to a bold decision.

Wrexham star’s decision pays off

Anthony Forde was playing with Oxford United in League One, the third tier of English soccer, last season. Meanwhile, he received an unexpected call last summer. Wrexham AFC coach Phil Parkinson called the 29-year-old to convince him to join the club in the fifth tier. It was going to be an uphill task for Parkinson to convince Forde to drop two divisions below.

After the call, Forde took the bold decision and joined Wrexham. Recently the former Wolves player opened up about the decision to join Ryan Reynolds’ club and how it paid off. Forde said, “I was still at Oxford and had another year left but my agent rang me and said the manager wanted to speak to me here, Phil Parkinson.”

“I said I’d speak to him anyway and see what the story is because I didn’t know loads about the club and after I had the call with him, he’s a great person, and he sucked me in more than I thought to be honest,” Forde added. The Wrexham star then revealed how Parkinson convinced him. 

“He told me about the whole setup, how the owners back you, and they’re not just these famous people that don’t care, they’re really into the club,” Forde added. “A week later, I decided to go, and it was the best decision I’ve made. It was something different and now we’ve got promoted. It’s paid off,” the former Oxford United star said about the decision to join the Red Dragons. 

Forde became part of the incredible season

The midfielder was one of the crucial players in the title run of Wrexham. He notched three goals for the club in 31 National League appearances for the Red Dragons. The record-breaking season saw Wrexham getting promoted to League Two. The 29-year-old has one more year left in his Wrexham contract and will hope to help the club in the fourth division next season.

The world’s third-oldest club will hope to continue its form in League Two. They will try to finish in the top seven to have a shot at promotion next season. Whether the club gets success in its other promotion, chase remains to be seen.
