The Gregg Berhalter situation turned into an ugly mess in recent times. The wife of former USMNT player Claudio Reyna, Danielle, opened up on the domestic violence of Berhalter on his now wife back in 1992. It all blew up after Gregg criticized one USMNT player for not stepping up on and off the soccer pitch. Therefore, it created divisions amongst the soccer fraternity on Berhalter’s issues. But he received support from various people.

Ted Lasso’s creator Brendan Hunt reflected on the work the coach did for the national team. And he was annoyed with how fickle people were on taking sides for Berhalter’s antics.

Appearing on the Alexi Lalas’ State of the Union Podcast, Hunt commented on the current situation. He stated, “Gregg Berhalter did literally every single thing that was asked of him…yet…every step of the way, just piles & piles of ‘BerhalterOut’…I just don’t know what you people want and it’s a shame that you’re so f-ing loud.”

Considering his work tenure, Berhalter took USMNT to the Round of 16, where they lost against the Netherlands. In addition, he created a core of young USMNT players like Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, Josh Sargent, Brenden Aaronson, Sergiño Dest, Gio Reyna, and Tyler Adams, who would probably peak during the 2026 World Cup held in the USA. But, as one ‘player’ left the national team during the World Cup, all hell broke loose.

It is when Danielle Reyna told the US Sporting director about Gregg’s past domestic violence issues. And most of it happened because his comments about her son frustrated her.

In line to coach USMNT again?

Despite not revealing the player, Reyna posted an Instagram message confirming the incident. It became surprising as Gregg and his wife reconciled and later married. But he felt disappointed as he believed it was her story to tell. According to Sky Sports, he stated, “I think it’s sadness. Our entire family is saddened by these events. It’s something we wanna move forward from. The worst part of it for me is my heart aches for my wife. It was her story to tell.”

As the incident divided the US soccer fraternity, some people supported him, and others do not want him to coach the national team. However, investigators cleared any issues with him joining USMNT yet again. Hopefully, we can see how it pans out in the future.
