The 2023 Premier League has been nothing less than a rollercoaster ride so far. All clubs continue to battle over a single point. Not just teams but even the players have shared many ups and downs in the campaign till now. Although it’s too early to predict the ultimate outcome of the league, renewed pundit Jamie Carragher has already expressed his opinion. In a surprising turn of events, the England legend has branded Andre Onana and David Raya’s Premier League season as a total failure. 

Both Onana and Raya have garnered criticism over their dipping performances in the last few games. But let’s hear why the two goalkeepers of the Premier League’s big six became targets of the Liverpool icon.

Andre Onana and David Raya became topics of discussion in the latest episode of the ‘On Stick to Football’ podcast, courtesy of Sky Bet’s The Overlap. The panel, including Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Ian Wright, and Roy Keane, discussed the biggest flop in the 2023 season of the Premier League.

As Wright joked about keeping referees in the options, Carragher wasted no time in delivering his verdict on behalf of others present in the room. The pundit threw the light on Manchester United’s Onana and Arsenal’s Raya.

He said, “I probably look at the two goalkeepers, probably at United and Arsenal. They have been poor. They’ve come in as big sort of, you know, they’re [Arsenal] going to move on from sort of Ramsdale, Man United going to move on from De Gea and it’s just it’s almost stayed the same or gone backwards, hasn’t it?” All agreed with Carragher after he concluded. 

Notably, the Red Devils’ shot-stopper has conceded 18 goals and kept just five clean sheets in 18 games. On the other hand, the Gunners goalkeeper has conceded 10 goals and managed to keep just four clean sheets in 10 games. Either way, it was a strong criticism from the Liverpool legend.

However, in a surprising claim, Onana was backed as the second-best goalkeeper in the Premier League by Erik ten Hag.

Following Manchester United’s 3-3 draw with Galatasaray, ten Hag made assertive claims that Onana ranks as the second-best goalkeeper in the Premier League based on statistics. Surprisingly, he’s right, as Opta data reveals that Onana has stopped an impressive 3.67 goals in the current season.

Thomas Kaminski of Luton Town stands as the sole goalkeeper with a flawless record, preventing 6.3 goals. Onana, however, shares the lead in the Premier League alongside Sam Johnstone of Crystal Palace and Nick Pope of Newcastle.
