For so long now, Chelsea has been a top 4 main stay, but off late, there have been some sub par displays as well. Last season they finished 12th, and before that, although they finished 3rd, they were 18 points behind 2nd place Liverpool. This season, as it stands, they are 9th on the table and 9 points away from 4th place Arsenal. Despite the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino, the Blues currently remain outside of the European qualifying positions. One of the reasons the downfall has continued is the constant injuries to club captain Reece James. Now, club legend, John Obi Mikel, has asked the club to take the situation seriously.

Chelsea have found stability, but for the wrong reasons this season. This is because they continue to hover around the eighth to tenth place positions in the Premier League table this season, which is unlikely since Chelsea is not a club one would usually find mid table.

The Chelsea fans saw hope when Mauricio Pochettino was appointed as the manager of the season. What followed was the typical spending of Todd Boehly in the last summer transfer window. However, the scenario has not changed with new signings and the manager. Now, in a podcast, Blues legend John Obi-Mikel has said that the injury of club captain Reece James is playing a significant role. He further said, “Reece James, I like him, he should be the captain but, you can’t be the captain if you are constantly getting injured. I love him as a player and as a person.”

Several fans will certainly agree with the statement of the former Nigerian midfielder. Last season, he made only 16 appearances, and this season, he has made only eight in the Premier League. He currently remains out with a hamstring injury. Another Chelsea legend, Joe Cole, who was present in the podcast, also said that the club should take it slow with his recovery. The England international should also avoid too much gym and heavy lifting after he recovers.

Chelsea fans will certainly hope that their club recovers well and the injury never repeats. As far as the team is concerned, the squad has challenging games coming as they hope to finish in European places.

The squad has certainly improved under their Argentinian manager. However, the improvement has not been enough. It is reflected in the Premier League table. One of the reasons behind this is the inconsistency in the performances. One great performance has been followed by two poor performances. But, in the next several games, they will have to improve their mentality.

This is because they have some challenging games in the Premier League. Chelsea has their next five games against Liverpool, Wolves, Crystal Palace, Manchester City, and Tottenham. They also have a Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Middlesbrough and a tough game against Aston Villa in the FA Cup.
