Saudi Arabia is trying their best to emerge as a soccer superpower. The nation has roped in some big guns for their squad and has now added another icon to the mix. Former Manchester City star Yaya Toure has been named as the assistant coach for the Saudi Arabian national team. The former player will work alongside his ex-manager Roberto Mancini with the duo used to working with each other.

Mancini made a surprising move to Saudi Arabia this summer. The former Manchester City manager quit his job as the head coach of Italy earlier in August. However, he did not waste any time finding a new job as he penned a deal with Saudi Arabia just two weeks following his resignation.

The former Ivorian star had an illustrious career during his time at Manchester City. The player won multiple titles with the side and has transitioned to a coaching role following his retirement. Toure was working with the Belgian side Standard Liege but has reported leaving his job to link with Mancini in Saudi Arabia. This could be an enormous opportunity for the player to make his name on the field.

Apart from his time with the Belgian club, Toure also worked alongside Tottenham Hotspur as their academy manager. The three-time Premier League winner worked alongside the London-based club, joining them in December 2022, and received his coaching license during his time with the club.

Roberto Mancini blindsided Italy to join Saudi Arabia

Former Manchester manager Roberto Mancini stunned Italian fans this summer as he resigned from his position as the head coach of the national team. Without allowing the national team to find a quick replacement, Italy struggled when Mancini left. To add salt to the wounds, the manager then joined Saudi Arabia just fourteen days later, reportedly penning a cushy deal.

The manager has signed a four-year deal with the side, which will see him remain as the nation’s head coach until 2027. Mancini’s sudden resignation did not sit down well with the Italian soccer federation, who were allegedly fuming at his actions. Significantly, the manager lost interest in working with the team, as he was supposedly frustrated with the composition of his coaching staff.
