The History of Ballon d’Or and Messi’s record

Ballon d’Or isn’t an official FIFA award. This wouldn’t be the only shocking fact about the biggest award in the soccer world. Although from 2010 to 15 FIFA and France Football agreed to merge the award and FIFA player of the year. The Ballon d’Or started in 1956 but till 1995 only given to European players. The award got worldwide in 2007.

From 1995 to 2006, the award opened for players of any ethnicity playing for European clubs. Many legends like Pele never won a Ballon d’Or. A reevaluation from France Football suggests that if the award had been worldwide from the beginning, Pele would have won 7 Ballon d’Ors in his career.
