Who can forget Gareth Bale’s bicycle kick goal in the UEFA Champions League Final in 2018? It served Real Madrid their 13th Champions League trophy and completed their three-peat. Bale was phenomenal in the victory. Things changed the following season, and not for good. The former Welsh international, urged to join Wrexham AFC by Reynolds, suddenly fell down the pecking order for the Los Blancos.

His game time drastically went down and the Spanish giants loaned him out to Tottenham Hotspur. His torrid time at Real Madrid came to an end in June 2022 when his contract ended. He soon joined MLS side LAFC co-owned by Magic Johnson, on a one-year contract. The five-time Champions League winner took a significant pay cut to join the MLS club.

Gareth Bale took a significant pay cut to join LAFC

Bale was one of the highest earners, earning a massive $600,000 a week at Real Madrid until the end of his contract. The former Welsh forward did play a vital role in Real Madrid’s success over the last decade. After leaving Madrid, Bale had various offers on the table from European clubs but joined MLS side LAFC instead.

He signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles-based club with an option for another year. He joined the club mid-season and helped them win an MLS Cup by scoring an important goal in the final. Meanwhile, Bale earned peanuts at LAFC compared to his Real Madrid salary. His salary at LAFC was a mere $30,000 per week.

In context, Bale’s earnings dwarfed in comparison to Premier League flops playing in the MLS. Xherdan Shaqiri, one of the highest-paid players in the league, earns around $141,346 per week. Moreover, Christian Benteke earns nearly $76,923 gross per week. Both former Liverpool players had unsuccessful stints with the Merseyside club. Another Premier League flop, Victor Wanyama (former Tottenham Hotspurs player), also cashed in more than Bale.

Despite six months remaining in the contract, Bale retired from professional soccer in January. Wrexham owners, however, tried to convince him to join the club after getting a promotion.

Wrexham won the Vanarama National League title by beating Boreham Wood. The title ensured the automatic promotion of the Welsh club to the EFL League Two. The club will play in the Football League after 15 years of absence. A host of former soccer stars and celebrities congratulated the owners and the club for the achievement.

Gareth Bale was one of them. While replying to his message Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney urged him to unretire and join Wrexham for one season. It was a friendly give-and-take between the soccer star and the club’s owners. However, it raised the eyebrows of many fans.
