The exodus to the Saudi Pro League brought a seismic shift in the soccer world. Elite stars decided to tread the same path as Cristiano Ronaldo. While the majority of the soccer world opposed the migration of players to the Middle East, the father of Romelu Lukaku, on the other hand, desired something else for his son, hoping the Belgian international would have ‘thought more about himself’ and left Europe.

Despite strong opposition to the Middle Eastern soccer influx by the public, Roger Lukaku has a distinct perspective on his son’s decision. He expressed his hope that Romelu Lukaku should have followed in CR7’s footsteps.

Romelu Lukaku was the subject of transfer speculation this whole summer. The Belgian star was linked with a move to a few Saudi clubs. However, the striker ultimately decided to stay in Europe. While he must have delighted the soccer world with his decision, the same cannot be said for Mr. Roger, his father. In an interview, he said, “Lukaku should have done the same thing as Cristiano Ronaldo and made sure his place in the national team would be guaranteed whether or not he went to Saudi Arabia. He should have thought more about himself and left, but he ultimately decided to stay in Europe.”

It seems Mr. Roger was disappointed to see his son reject lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia. Notably, after a merry-go-round transfer saga between Chelsea and Inter Milan, the striker joined AS Roma on loan till the end of the season. If Jose Mourinho‘s side decides not to buy or extend the loan option, then he might have to dial some Gulf clubs, as a return to Chelsea seems highly unlikely. Al Hilal was the primary candidate to secure the services of the 31-year-old. Perhaps that might be the case again. Moreover, singing him would be easy for Neymar and Co. given how much he adores them.

One take at a time

I first kicked a soccer ball when I was 12. My early exposure to playing the sport earned me many accolades at the zonal and district levels. I still remember my first goal, where I scored a 90+5 minute header like Sergio Ramos did in the 2014 Champions League final against Atletico Madrid.
