La Pulga was not featured in La Albiceleste’s squad for this month’s friendlies as he continues to nurse his right hamstring injury. While it was expected that the 36-year-old would return to action this weekend, specifically on March 30, his comeback will be further delayed. Journalist, Gaston Edul reports that Messi is instead looking to return for the next midweek’s clash, where the Florida side will be facing Monterrey on April 3rd for the CONCACAF Champions League QF Leg 1. This reported decision by La Pulga stems from 2 main reasons. 

To begin with, skipping Saturday’s match against New York City will help him get more rest. Neither Miami nor Messi himself would be in the mood to rush his recovery from injury. In addition, the Champions League clash against Monterrey poses a much more crucial test for the Herons. With the opening leg scheduled at home, the No. 10 would be looking to help his side gain an advantage in the first leg. While it’s potentially clear about why Messi is opting out of the New York City clash, it would pose problems for Tata Martino. The tactician would once again need to line up a perfect starting XI in the absence of their star player.

Can Inter Miami repeatedly sustain the absence of Lionel Messi? 

Lionel Messi has been absent from Fort Lauderdale’s training complex since the CONCACAF Champions League RO16 Leg 2 clash against Nashville. Despite Miami securing a remarkable win against DC United in the subsequent fixture, they stumbled with a horrific 4-0 defeat against the New York Red Bulls. With Messi’s absence looming once again, they must strive to give their best for the upcoming clash. 

Martino and his team currently sit in 2nd place with 10 points. Conversely, New York City finds themselves at the bottom with just 3 points. While the match may seem straightforward, surprises can be expected as the away side aims to make an impact and capitalize on Messi’s absence.
