Cristiano Ronaldo has been in the headlines for quite a time now. Portugal has qualified for the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup after a big win over Switzerland. Portugal manager Fernando Santos decided to bench Ronaldo for the crucial Round of 16 clash. However, the bold move paid off as Ronaldo’s replacement, Goncalo Ramos, scored a hat-trick to power Portugal to the QFs. However, Santos’ decision didn’t go down well with Ronaldo’s family, who took to social media to react to it.

Ronaldo wasn’t at his best during Portugal’s shocking loss in their final group stages game. Many thought Santos benched Ronaldo because of that, but the manager has denied all those claims.

Following are some of the reactions to her rant:

After the game, Santos revealed that it was a ‘strategical’ decision to bench Ronaldo in the R16 game. Youngster Goncal Ramos received his first start of the World Cup and scored a hat trick. He became only the fourth Portuguese player to do so, with Ronaldo being the 3rd. Ramos also became the first player to score a knockout hat-trick since Pele.

Ronaldo came off the bench and played for 17 mins. However, by the time he was substituted, the former European champions were already 5-1 ahead. He didn’t have much time to contribute but did get a good free kick near the box. However, his shot hit the wall, which became the only shot he took during the game.

CR7 is now focused on winning the competition with Portugal, which would be his 3rd silverware with his national team.
