NWSL is gaining more and more viewership every year. Not only is it good for the League, it eventually provides more teams, and creates more competition that helps the sports. With fans filling stadiums to watch NWSL, many started considering investing in League as an option. One such team is Angel city FC founded by Natalie Portman. Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian majorly funded the team along with countless other entities. The husband of tennis legend Serena Williams had talked about his admiration for the sport countless times. In an interview with ESPN FC, he talked about what inspired him and others to invest in soccer.

The team played its first season this year. They have a long way to go but the marketing is working and NWSL is creating an impact on the fans and they are filling stadiums to see these great players play.

What inspired them to invest in NWSL

Investing in soccer was odd for Alexis, Natalie, and other stars. It all started with Alexis going to watch USWNT play in the 2019 WC, and getting shocked to know the huge fan following these players had. Years later, Alexis said that this was the day when he came to know that when we talk about great soccer players in the USA, it’s a very one-sided battle. The domination of USWNT inspired Alexis to invest in NWSL.

While talking about other partners in ownership of the team, he said, “Give credit where it is due. I met Natalie. She was one of the first founding members of the club, along with Kara Nortman and Julie Uhrman. These women had a vision and once they started sharing it folks throughout here in Los Angeles. We found so many folks who signed up and just simply said, ‘I want to be a part of this… Take my money. I’m so excited to come to a match.”
