Thiago Silva Highlights Neymar’s Unfulfilled PSG Dream as Too Much Pressure Took It’s Toll

PSG are ushering in a new era under Luis Enrique. With the departure of stars like Neymar and Marco Veratti, the current side is unidentical to the PSG sides of the past. Recently, a former talisman of PSG- Thiago Silva, who spent 8 years at the club, opened up about his stint in Paris. The Chelsea center-back also spoke about Neymar and his dream that slipped away.

Neymar left PSG in the summer for Al Hilal. However, an ACL injury means that his season is effectively over. Injuries also hampered his career at PSG with Neymar suffering 20 separate injury issues. Despite not being at his Barcelona level, the $263 million signing came close to realizing his goal. The failure of which still seems to affect the Brazilian.

Thiago Silva has given insight into the situation behind the scenes at PSG to Le Parisien. The veteran soccer star revealed that Neymar dreamt of winning the Champions League. He said “My dream, like Neymar, Marquinhos and Verratti, was to win the UCL, I can tell you that. Marquinhos still has chances, but with PSG, it’s over for us. Neymar would certainly have liked to stay. Winning the CL was his dream”. While the trio could not win the competition, they played a pivotal role in the run-up to the CL Final in 2020, PSG’s best-ever performance in the competition.

The Brazilian center-back also highlighted a possible reason for the failure in the Champions League. He revealed, “At PSG, we took one step forward then three steps back. It was really very difficult. The pressure was too much“.

Silva’s last game for PSG was the CL final loss. While he was expected to continue at PSG, a U-turn from the board meant Silva left PSG for Chelsea, a move that helped to achieve his ‘dream’

Thiago Silva won the Champions League in his first season with Chelsea. He addressed his success at Chelsea by saying, “When I arrived at Chelsea, I lost the weight of pressure. That’s not why I won the CL, but I didn’t have that responsibility. I felt lighter“. A subtle hint to the environment at PSG? The 39-year-old defender is still going strong and is a key member of Chelsea. Perhaps PSG might be regretting their decision to let the veteran star leave considering his replacement Sergio Ramos had a disappointing spell.
