Wrexham has proven their critics wrong with two games left in the season. While experts predicted the Welsh side to spend another season in League Two, the Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney co-owned side have punched their ticket to League One after securing a top-three finish. While the team’s performance has been commendable, there have been games that perfectly outline the 2023/24 campaign for the Red Dragons.

Phil Parkinson’s side has made 44 appearances in League Two this season, picking up 24 wins in the process. While all the victories have been crucial in the team’s journey to promotion, some games mean more than winning. Here are five games that helped Wrexham secure promotion to the third tier of English football.

Let’s begin with one of the team’s biggest defeats of the season – the game taught the team what not to be going ahead. Wrexham lacked character during their clash against Stockport and was thoroughly punished. This was the team’s first defeat of the season and the margin was surely disheartening for the fans. Phil Parkinson was absolutely fuming following the game with the Wrexham boss slamming his players for the lack of fundamental aspects. It seems like the team took Parkinson’s words to heart, with the players bouncing back strong in the coming set of games.

4. Wrexham vs Crawley Town (Scoreline: 4 – 1)

The Red Dragons put on a showcase display against Crawley Town last week with the team picking up their 100th win under Phil Parkinson. The manager was quite pleased with his players following the game with the Wrexham boss jovial while addressing the media following the game. Parkinson stated, “The way the lads approached the game was excellent and obviously very pleased with the win. It was a convincing one and a lot of quality shown on the night.” The win provided the team with much-needed momentum heading into the business end of the season.

This was the highest attendance for the Welsh club and home since 2007, with owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds funding a temporary stand to facilitate the fans. The game did not disappoint as Wrexham and Newport struggled for dominance, with the first half ending in a goalless draw. However, goals from James Jones and Elliot Lee in the second half helped Wrexham secure the win in front of a record-breaking number of fans.

2. Wrexham vs Swindon Town (Scoreline: 5 – 5)

The clash between Wrexham and Swindon was one for the ages. Both teams displayed tremendous attacking display, bagging five goals each. While the scoreline shows the team’s prowess, it doesn’t do justice to the team’s grit. Wrexham was down by 4-1 during the game before Elliot Lee sparked the comeback that saw the team level things up in the second half. Despite Swindon picking up the fifth goal in the closing minutes of the game, the Red Dragons pushed on to get the equalizer to send their fans into a frenzy.
