It’s just a matter of time until Inter Miami takes on Monterrey. The Herons are back for the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions League to make a comeback. The highlight of the show would be the return of Lionel Messi. While his own faithful are grateful for his comeback, the rival fans seem to have made their feelings pretty clear, as La Pulga was greeted in Mexico with boos.

The incident transpired before the kickoff. During the announcement of the rosters at the Estadio BBVA stadium, as soon as the name and picture of the Argentinian superstar were flashed on the big screens, Monterrey fans started booing. It looks like the mind games have already begun from the opposition side even before the match has started. Clearly, fans are not receptive to facing Messi. Notably, this is not the first time Monterrey fans are targeting the 36-year-old with their crowd work.

Earlier, during the opening leg of the quarter-finals, Messi watched his side lose the match from the sidelines. The Mexican fans who traveled to Chase Stadium started chanting, “Messi was afraid,” with a lot of claps and waving flags. Perhaps we can expect a similar kind of atmosphere throughout the match. The only question remains whether Messi can overcome the challenges of the home fans and lead his side to glory.

Can Lionel Messi take Inter Miami to the semi-finals?

Looking at the attitude of the rival fans from the start, it’s pretty clear that Lionel Messi’s return won’t be a comfy one. The skipper would not only remain a subject of chants but would also face tough competition from Monterrey stars. The Liga MX giants won’t let him find his way around the back of the net easily. Hence, an extra effort would be required, not just from Messi but from his comrades as well.

The likes of Luis Suarez, Julian Grezzel, and Diego Gomez would be required to step up their game. It’s good that they are trailing by just one goal. All they would require is to score one to level the game. Not conceding the goal, well, that goes without saying. Messi’s return should be a major confidence boost for Inter Miami. Rest assured, if they manage to find their way, then there is no stopping them.
