This is because they get to see the top clubs go for exciting signings for the upcoming season, some of them ending up as long sagas. However, there are certain controversial transfers that frustrated even managers like Sir Alex Ferguson. There was a transfer saga that made Manchester United’s iconic coach so disappointed that he even warned the player he would regret it.

Any player would have felt nervous hearing the comments from a manager. However, this legendary Nigerian midfielder, whom the former United gaffer warned, notably managed to succeed with Chelsea.

Manchester United announced the signing of youngster John Obi-Mikel in 2005 on their website. They also stated that they had agreed on a fee with his club Lyn and his agents. But, later, Chelsea claimed that they had agreed on a move with his agents and the player himself. John also made the statement that he wanted only a move to Chelsea despite signing for Manchester United. In the end in the 2006 transfer window, the Blues resolved the issue by agreeing to a 4 million deal with Lyn and a 12 million fee with Red Devils.

Sir Alex Ferguson tried to convince John Obi-Mikel to stay with the Red Devils. However, he wanted only a move to Chelsea. Now in an interview with Rio Ferdinand, John has revealed the confrontation from Ferguson. I said, “Sorry gaffer, I can’t play here. I want to go to Chelsea”. He went absolutely red, walked out of the meeting, and said, “You are going to regret this” and just left. The statement from a manager like Sir Alex Ferguson could have shrunk the confidence of any other young player.

However, luckily, the Nigerian midfielder was determined to succeed in his career at Chelsea. John Obi-Mikel gave his all for the Premier League club during his 11-year stay which made him a hero.

The Nigerian won plenty of trophies to prove the claim of the Manchester United manager wrong

John Obi Mikel took a risk of moving to Chelsea after rejecting Manchester United. Chelsea had just started competing well for trophies under Russian owner Roman Abramovich. Whereas, the Red Devils would become trophy winners every season under Sir Alex Ferguson. But, luckily for the midfielder, Jose Mourinho was the manager of the Blues. The Portuguese manager had brought his ambition of winning trophies with him after his Champions League glory with Porto.

Mikel quickly established himself as the main midfielder in the line-up. After that, both Chelsea and the player did not look back. The trophies started coming. In his 11-year stay, he won 4 FA Cup trophies, 2 Premier League trophies, 2 English Cup trophies that are now the Carabao Cup, 1 Champions League trophy, and 1 Europa League trophy. He won a total of 10 trophies with the Blues. This means that he almost won 1 trophy every season.

In the end, Chelsea did make the best decision at the start of his career. After, all the issues that happened at the start of his Blues career, winning 10 trophies in 11 years makes it all worth it.
