“Hold Your Heads Up High” – Serena Williams’ Husband Alexis Ohanian Applauded Patrick Mahomes’ Kansas City Current for Their Insane Comeback Last Season

The last season of NWSL saw Portland Thorns FC clinching the Championship after beating Kansas City Current in the playoff final. It was the third title for the Thorns. However, Kansas City Current was applauded for their effort of reaching the Championship final after finishing last in the 2021 season. Serena Williams’ husband shared a message praising the efforts of Kansas City.
Kansas City came into the last season on the back of a poor 2021 season. They finished fifth in the 2022 table, and the new format meant they qualified for the Championship playoffs. It was a great effort from the team who lost in the playoffs final to come out of the disappointment of the previous season.

Serena Williams’ husband, Alexis Ohanian, praised Kansas City
Ohanian was impressed with Kansas City’s campaign last term. After their defeat to the Portland Thorns in the championship playoff final, he sent a powerful message. Ohanian wrote, “To go from last in the NWSL, to the championship game in ONE year is something to be proud of. Hold your heads up high Kansas City Current. Excited to watch you all in ’23.”

Ohanian’s Angel City FC started playing in NWSL last season. They finished 8th, missing out on the playoff place by four points. But the redemption of Kansas City Current caught the eye of MLS fans last season. The 2021 season was the first for the Current and didn’t go well, as they finished the season with only 16 points.

However, the club changed the tide in the second season, finishing fifth with 36 points. At one point, they were on 13 games unbeaten streak that ensured their place in the NWSL Championship playoff. They scored 29 goals in the last season compared to 15 in the previous.
Kansas City Current will look for a better season this time around. They recently traded Lyn Williams with Gotham City FC, earning the second pick in the NWSL draft picking one of the most exciting youngsters Michelle Cooper.
Kansas City Current’s dream run in the 2022 NWSL Championship playoffs
The new format of the Championship meant the top six teams were eligible for the playoffs instead of the top four. OL Reign and Portland Thorns FC qualified for the semifinals after finishing in the top two. In the first playoff quarter-final, Kansas City Current took on Houston Dash.

Current won the game by 2-1, setting up a semifinal clash with table toppers OL Reigns. Current went on to beat Reigns 2-0, setting up Championship final with two-time champions Thorns. However, they fell short of their first title in their second season after suffering a defeat to the Thorns.
