Tottenham Hotspur announced the signing of FC Barcelona right-back Emerson Royal after the Spanish club accepted a £25.73 million bid. Emerson becomes Spurs’s fifth signing this transfer window as the North London club look to make a charge for top four this season.

Spurs currently sit first in the table after three games, which is a huge improvement from their 7th place finish last season. However, it is an interesting move from FC Barcelona who let go of Emerson Royal after only 29 days since he joined.

Initially, Emerson joined Barcelona in 2019 from Brazilian club Atletico Mineiro. However, he moved to Real Betis under Manuel Pellegrini and was a regular player. His performances earned rave reviews from pundits and scouts alike, and FC Barcelona re-signed him this summer.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta had initially revealed that Emerson had a 300 million euro release clause. He also added that he was going to stay at the club for years. However, things have changed in just under a month.

This is a shrewd signing for Spurs who used to play Serge Aurier in that position. Aurier is now out of favor at the club and Emerson Royal will be an upgrade over the Ivory Coast international. Barcelona made a hefty profit of 21 million euros on the Brazilian as their buy-back clause was valued at just €9 million.

Tottenham Hotspur and their brilliant start to the season

Spurs have had a brilliant transfer window this season as they got rid of a lot of fringe players. Players like Erik Lamela, Moussa Sissoko and Juan Foyth were shown the door by Tottenham’s new director Fabio Paratici.
