Cristiano Ronaldo sent shock waves across the world when he decided to leave Juventus in the transfer window. The biggest reason why people were shocked was the timing of the announcement. It came at the absolute end of the window, when the Serie A season had already begun.

During the Euros, the rumors surrounding Ronaldo’s departure died. Ronaldo even participated in Juve’s pre-season with new coach Max Allegri as well. Despite this, the Portuguese forced a last-ditch move to Manchester United 3 days before the transfer window closed. His Juventus teammates were clearly not impressed by this decision.

Giorgio Chiellini, in a recent interview with DAZN, revealed how Cristiano’s decision to leave the Old Lady came as a massive shock to the players. The Euro winner then added that he also understands why Ronaldo left, as he wanted new goals and a team that would play for him.

“We had arrived at a point in our relationship where Cristiano needed new goals and a team that would play for him, because when he finds a team like that he is decisive. He is proving it in these months and he has also shown it with us”, said Chiellini.

Chiellini believes that Cristiano Ronaldo should have left Juventus earlier

Chiellini then spoke at length about Juventus’ rejuvenation program. He shared how Juve was investing in youth and thus it was important to have a good preseason to get them accustomed to the team. He believed that Ronaldo leaving so late in the transfer window hurt the team, as they had to change their preparations altogether. This eventually led to Juve’s worst start in Serie A in the past 60 years.

“Here at Juventus, a program of rejuvenation and restarting was born. If Ronaldo had stayed, he would have been an added value, but it is normal that he thought more about the present than the future. Ronaldo left on August 28, it would have been better for us if he had left earlier… If he had left earlier we would have had time to prepare better,” added Chiellini.
