Manchester United have been one of the biggest clubs in the world of football for a long time now. They’ve had several great moments in the club’s history with some of the best players gracing the game as a Red Devil. Notably, former England international, David Beckham was one of their famed players, who today is remembered as a United legend.

A graduate of United’s famed class of 92, David has seen the highest of the highs at Old Trafford. However, there was one dark day in his United and footballing career. Notably, that infamous incident involved Sir Alex Ferguson, football’s greatest manager, kicking a boot at David Beckham’s face.

What really happened in the dressing room on that day?

While many have argued Sir Alex’s intent behind the kick, Carlos Quieroz, a Portuguese coach, who was Ferguson’s assistant at the time, knows the whole story. Ferguson was known for his temper and he did kick a boot, after fierce rivals, Arsenal, knocked United out of the FA Cup. Not to mention, Beckham needed stitches after the boot hit his face.

Beckham left for Real Madrid the following year, and so did Quieroz. However, the Portuguese coach talked about the incident in an interview with football magazine FourFourTwo.

It’s time to establish the truth behind that story. Someone once said that if Sir Alex had intended that [hitting Beckham in the face], his left foot must have been real quality,” he said.

Sir Alex Ferguson did not intend to hit David Beckham with the boot!

Quieroz added that he was present in the dressing room during the time of the incident and Ferguson actually hit a table first with his shot, which deflected it towards Beckham. The coach also joked that Ferguson did not have a good left foot.

I was there in the dressing room that day and, let’s put things right, it was not a good shot – because the boot first hit a table and only then it went in Beckham’s direction. Sir Alex, I’m very sorry, but your left foot was not quite as good as you think!” he concluded.
