The World Cup in Qatar is coming up, and the English national team has a score to settle. They reached the semi-finals of the tournament in the last edition and missed out on winning the Euros last year, courtesy of penalty misses from Bukayo Saka, Jadon Sancho, and Marcus Rashford.

Bukayo Saka has since redeemed himself and shown his class for Arsenal. However, both Rashford and Sancho have struggled massively this season in the Manchester United team. This has cost them their spot in the national team as Gareth Southgate did not call them up for England’s matches in June.

Gareth Southgate has his say

In place of Rashford and Sancho, West Ham winger Jarrod Bowen has claimed a spot. However, all is not lost as England manager Gareth Southgate revealed that both of them can play their way into the national team next season.

Southgate did add that it will be harder for the pair to break into the team as time goes on. The English manager also added that both of them lost their spot in the Manchester United squad, which in turn contributed to them losing their spot in the England squad.

“Of course, it?s more difficult ? you know, the closer we get, the more difficult it is. But they?ve got to start playing well with their club. Neither of them have really played at the end of the season,” Southgate said.

Southgate urges Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho to get it right at United

Southgate doubled down on his statements and explained that he selects his team based on the player’s form with their clubs. Rashford and Sancho aren’t the only Manchester United stars who have lost their place in the England national team squad as Luke Shaw has been dropped as well.

At the moment there?s obviously room for those two compared to others in those positions that we?ve picked that their level hasn?t been at the level of the others,” he added.

All of them will get their chance next season with new manager Erik Ten Hag coming in at United.
