Football is the biggest sport on the planet with the most amount of fans. There are millions of them across the world, with varying levels of passion and emotion attached to the game. A few thousand of them proved theirs when they attended the USMNT game against Honduras.

The USA played and beat Honduras by a scoreline of 3-0 in their CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers game. The match was relatively commonplace except for the fact that it was one of the coldest matches of all time. Temperatures plummeted to a shocking -17 degrees, and it was the coldest game that the USMNT has played in over 20 years.

The various experiments during the game

Several people watched the game live in Minnesota as two Honduras players were treated for Hypothermia. A fan underlined the severity of the conditions when he tried to see how long it would take for his beer to freeze. The effects were apparent just fifteen minutes in and then the beer was completely frozen after one hour.

Every fan was wearing sweaters and gloves to shelter themselves from the cold. They did have fun though as goals from European stars Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie led the team to a 3-0 win. Walker Zimmerman got the third goal for the team.

However, not everyone was as pleased as the USMNT fans who attended the game. Honduras manager Hernan Dario Gomez was incensed after losing two players to Hypothermia, and he said that playing football wasn’t possible in those conditions.

“When we go down to those countries, and it’s 90 degrees in 90% dew point and it’s unbearable humidity and guys are getting dehydrated and cramping up and getting heat exhaustion, that’s the nature of our competition,” Berhalter said.

USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter defended himself and the match organizers by saying that all of the equipment was provided to the Honduras team. He also brought up the example of a few matches that the USMNT played in the blistering heat where the humidity made the players cramp up.
