Gareth Southgate Ignores Jose Mourinho’s Advice in New England National Team Squad

Gareth Southgate announced his squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, and there are some notable absentees. As England fans scratch their heads over the omission of Mason Greenwood and Jude Bellingham, the biggest in-form star to miss out on the team has to be Tammy Abraham.

The Englishman recently moved to AS Roma as he wasn’t a part of Thomas Tuchel’s plans at Chelsea. Roma’s new manager Jose Mourinho welcomed him with open arms and has turned Abraham into a world-class striker, in the mould of someone like Didier Drogba.

Mourinho had some high praise for Abraham and spoke about him before Roma’s 3-2 loss to Verona in the league.

I am trying to create a monster of a forward for Gareth Southgate. Unless he doesn’t have proper eyes and still not call him up with the England national team, then I would suggest for Tammy to switch countries,” Mourinho said.

While the Englishman is no longer eligible to play for Nigeria, he is not getting a chance in Southgate’s team. Abraham has played eight times for AS Roma and already has two goals and two assists. However, his output is disguising the complete player that he has become.

Abraham has become a ball carrier for Jose Mourinho’s team and has improved his dribbling. His carries have helped Henrikh Mkhitaryan blossom and move into the attack a lot more than he used to do. Roma’s previous number nine, Edin Dzeko, didn’t really have the skillset to do this, and hence, Abraham seems like a breath of fresh air for the Giallorossi faithful.

Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup Qualifiers:

Gareth Southgate’s squad had a few more surprises as the manager showed his trust in Jadon Sancho. The young forward hasn’t hit the ground running at Manchester United, but Southgate still picked him for the squad, given his undeniable talent.

The addition of Fikayo Tomori was also a pleasant surprise after the Englishman’s outstanding performances in Serie A for AC Milan.
