The UEFA Champions League returned in all its glory, much to the chagrin of few. However, Manchester United fans won’t be one of them as even though Cristiano Ronaldo couldn’t keep his streak going by scoring a goal, they still rescued a point from the Wanda Metropolitano.

United played Atletico Madrid in their UCL Round-of-16 tie and ended up drawing the match by a scoreline of 1-1. Substitute Anthony Elanga rescued the club with a vital goal in the second half that helped United stay in the match for the second leg.

Joao Felix scores a wonderful goal in front of Cristiano Ronaldo

Young players were the theme of the day as Atletico Madrid youngster Joao Felix got the opening goal. He headed in a wonderful cross from Renan Lodi. The ball hit the post and went in, giving United goalkeeper David de Gea no chance to move.

The goal was Felix’s first in this season’s UCL campaign, and the Portuguese forward was brilliant throughout the match. However, the goal was the cherry on top of the cake, and his goal set the tone for the rest of the match. Atletico defended brilliantly in the first half and pressed well to ensure that United never really got going.

Manchester United vs. Atletico Madrid: The tale of the tape

Things got heated in the match as several players like Marcos Llorente and Luke Shaw were shown yellow cards for their frustrations. Things were very similar in the second half as United could show no attacking output. United’s German manager Ralf Rangnick made the first changes and brought on Nemanja Matic for Paul Pogba, along with replacing both fullbacks.

The move worked wonderfully as the team started to gel together. Marcus Rashford was substituted for Anthony Elanga too, and it was the Swedish teenager who scored the equalizer in the 80th minute. Elanga slotted the ball in Jan Oblak’s net after a beautifully weighted through ball from Bruno Fernandes.

It’ll be interesting to see who progresses from this tie, but for now, United have the advantage.
