Liverpool FC has finally won their first trophy this season as they beat Chelsea in the final of the Carabao Cup, a trophy which usually is won by Manchester City if the last five years are anything to go by. It all came down to a penalty shootout after no goals were scored in regulation and in extra time.

However, the match was very exciting and open for both sides. A total of four goals were disallowed for the teams and both teams missed a plethora of chances to score, especially Chelsea’s English midfielder Mason Mount, who missed two chances.

The tale of the tape: Liverpool vs Chelsea

Chelsea had three goals disallowed, and two of them were blatantly obvious. Romelu Lukaku scored from inside the box in extra time, but the goal was ruled out for offside. The replays weren’t conclusive and fans were kept questioning the validity of the decision.

The man of the match was undoubtedly Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy who kept Chelsea in the match with his saves. He was outstanding for the entirety of the 120 minutes, which made Tuchel’s decision of subbing him off all the more puzzling.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel decided to substitute Mendy out for Kepa Arrizabalaga, the most expensive goalkeeper in the world. He did the same thing in the UEFA Super Cup final, where Kepa proved his manager right and came up with the decisive saves to win them the trophy.

However, things went terribly wrong here as Kepa did not save a single penalty in the entire penalty shootout. He let in 11 penalties, and to make matters worse, missed his own. He stepped up to take the 22nd penalty of the contest and skied it over the goal, giving Liverpool the win.
