FC Barcelona was once the greatest club in the world, and have certainly enjoyed one of the most successful years of all time in 2009. The club won every single competition there was to win, ending up with six trophies, a feat only matched by FC Bayern Munich in 2020.

However, a lot has changed since those days. Their club talisman and captain Lionel Messi left the club this season to join Paris Saint Germain. His departure led to a downfall that few could’ve imagined. Their manager and club legend, Ronald Koeman, was fired mid-season after a horrible start in the league which saw them out of the top 6.

They then appointed another club legend, Xavi, who played a huge role in that all-conquering team of 2009, but that didn’t help them stay in the UEFA Champions League. FC Barcelona dropped down into the UEFA Europa League for the first time since 2003, one year before Messi’s debut at the club.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang makes his intentions very clear

They are trying to turn the tide now, and Xavi is the man who is assigned to bring this reformation through. Barcelona signed players like Ferran Torres and Dani Alves to help improve the squad, but the biggest name they signed in the January transfer window is Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Gabon international was at Arsenal, but he was going through a rough time at the club. Barca picked him up on a free transfer and the forward revealed his plans for the future after his move. “We’re going to win the Champions League with Barca. We are going to work to come back and win it,” Aubameyang said.

Why did FC Barcelona sign Aubameyang?

While he wasn’t having the best time with Arsenal for the past two years, Aubameyang was one of the best strikers in the world before that. He won the Premier League golden boot in 2018-19 with 22 goals. He scored 22 goals again the next season and helped Arsenal keep their place in the top six.

It’ll be interesting to see if he can find his form again at FC Barcelona because if he does, the club will have a fantastic striker on their hands.
